The Karnataka Government is set to consider an ambitious ₹1.5 lakh crore urban mobility plan aimed at transforming Bengaluru’s transport infrastructure and addressing the city’s long-standing traffic congestion. The proposal includes the construction of a 40-kilometre underground tunnel road, new elevated corridors, flyovers, and several large-scale road improvement projects designed to reduce travel time and improve connectivity across the state capital. The plan is expected to be discussed at the highest levels of the state government before implementation begins.
According to officials, the proposed tunnel road will serve as a high-speed corridor connecting key parts of Bengaluru, allowing through traffic to bypass congested surface roads. The project is intended to ease pressure on major arterial routes, improve traffic flow, and reduce travel times for daily commuters. In addition to the tunnel, the government is also considering the construction of new elevated corridors, road widening projects, and improvements to major intersections.
The mobility overhaul is part of Karnataka’s broader strategy to modernize Bengaluru’s transportation network in response to the city’s rapid population growth and increasing number of vehicles. Authorities believe that integrating underground roads, elevated corridors, and upgraded public transport infrastructure will significantly improve urban mobility while supporting future economic development.
Urban planners have welcomed the proposal, noting that Bengaluru requires long-term infrastructure investments to keep pace with its expansion as India’s leading technology hub. However, experts have also emphasized the need for careful planning to minimize environmental impact, ensure proper rehabilitation where required, and coordinate construction with existing metro and road projects.
The government is expected to conduct detailed feasibility studies, environmental assessments, and financial evaluations before final approval is granted. Officials have stated that public consultations will also be undertaken to gather feedback from residents, urban planners, and other stakeholders.
If implemented, the ₹1.5 lakh crore mobility initiative would become one of the largest infrastructure projects in Karnataka’s history.
