Kochi, Kerala — The investigation into the tragic deaths of a 33-year-old man and his six-year-old daughter — found dead last month in their Elamakkara home — has taken a disturbing turn, with the post-mortem examination confirming that the girl was sexually abused before her death, police officials said.
On January 16, 2026, authorities discovered the bodies inside a rented house on St. Xavier’s Road after the child’s mother, who had returned from work, found the door closed and her husband’s phone switched off. The husband was found hanging from the ceiling, while the girl lay motionless on the bed. Initial inquiries suggested a murder-suicide, but further forensic examination has revealed a far more troubling picture.
According to a senior police officer with Elamakkara police, the medical reports showed clear signs of sexual abuse, prompting investigators to formally register a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The officer added that the probe is ongoing and declined to disclose further details, including any suspects, saying the investigation remains active.
Doctors conducting the autopsy noted multiple injuries, including to the child’s private parts, confirming abuse prior to her death. Police had earlier acknowledged that “certain injuries were found” but had not clarified their nature, citing the need for thorough medical evaluation.
In addition to forensic findings, investigators have explored other angles, including financial disputes involving the deceased and family friends, although police have not publicly named any individuals in connection with those enquiries.
The development has shocked residents in Kochi and reignited concerns about child safety and the effectiveness of protective mechanisms. Authorities say they are pursuing all leads and emphasise that the case remains under active investigation with further arrests or charges possible as evidence emerges.
The grim revelation underscores the need for vigilance and strengthened child protection efforts across communities to prevent such tragedies.
