Scientists warn that the Amazon rainforest—one of the world’s most vital ecosystems—is undergoing a dramatic shift toward a much hotter and drier “hypertropical” climate, raising fears that many tree species may not survive the coming decades. New climate analyses show that rising global temperatures, intensified droughts, and longer dry seasons are pushing the rainforest beyond the environmental conditions it has adapted to over millions of years.

Researchers report that record-breaking heat in recent years has weakened large portions of the forest, reducing its ability to store carbon and increasing tree mortality. The combination of extreme heat and insufficient rainfall is creating conditions previously unseen in the region, with some areas experiencing temperatures that surpass the tolerance limits of several iconic Amazonian species.

This climate shift threatens to accelerate a dangerous feedback loop: as more trees die, less carbon is absorbed, leading to further warming. Scientists caution that this could push the Amazon closer to a “tipping point,” where vast sections transition from dense rainforest to degraded savanna-like landscapes.

Indigenous communities, conservation groups, and climate experts are urging rapid global action to reduce emissions and protect remaining forest cover. Without urgent intervention, the Amazon’s rich biodiversity—and its crucial role in stabilizing the planet’s climate—may face irreversible decline.
