A 65-year-old woman from a remote village in Uttarkashi district sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a wild bear, triggering renewed concerns about increasing human–wildlife conflicts in the Himalayan region. According to local reports, the incident occurred early in the morning when the woman stepped out near her home. The bear, believed to have wandered close to the settlement in search of food, suddenly charged at her, leaving her with deep wounds before fleeing into the forest. Villagers rushed to help upon hearing her cries and immediately shifted her to a nearby hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
Residents say sightings of wild animals — including bears, leopards and even wolves — have increased significantly in recent months, especially in forest-fringe villages. Experts attribute the rise in such encounters to habitat disturbances, food scarcity in higher altitudes and seasonal movement of wildlife towards populated areas. Forest officials have initiated a probe and deployed a rapid-response team to track the bear and assess risk levels in the area. Awareness drives and patrols are also being strengthened to prevent further incidents.
The attack has sparked fear among villagers, many of whom rely on early-morning and late-evening outdoor activities for livelihood. Community members have urged authorities to enhance surveillance, install warning systems and improve lighting in vulnerable zones. As wildlife incidents continue to rise in Uttarkashi, officials emphasize the need for coordinated efforts between local communities and forest departments to ensure both human safety and wildlife conservation.
