A new traffic report released by the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has highlighted that 43 delivery agents were involved in road accidents in 2025, including four fatalities, underscoring growing concerns over road safety among gig economy riders. The data — shared during a recent safety awareness event aimed in particular at women gig workers such as food delivery and bike-taxi personnel — shows common causes of crashes included overspeeding, use of mobile phones while riding, signal violations, and rash driving. Authorities pointed out that improper helmet use, particularly helmets that were not securely fastened, contributed to many of the injuries and deaths.
To address the troubling trend, the GCTP has launched an enhanced road safety outreach and awareness campaign focused on educating delivery agents about responsible riding practices, proper helmet usage and adherence to traffic laws. Police officers, including senior traffic officials, participated in the programme and distributed helmets to gig workers as part of efforts to promote safer road behaviour. Safety officials also stressed the need for helmet compliance and urged delivery companies to support training initiatives for their riders.
The initiative reflects broader concerns about traffic violations involving delivery personnel amid rising two-wheeler activity in urban centres and the necessity of coordinated efforts to reduce crashes and protect vulnerable road users. news as reported.
