In a deeply moving and historic act of compassion, 10-month-old Alin Sherin Abraham has become Kerala’s youngest organ donor, giving new life to several patients across the state after she was tragically declared brain-dead following a road accident. The infant’s parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John of Mallappally in Pathanamthitta district, made the brave decision to donate her organs amid profound grief, officials said.

The accident occurred on February 5 when Alin, her mother and maternal grandparents were travelling on M.C. Road near Pallam Borma Junction and their vehicle was hit by another car from the opposite direction. Alin sustained critical injuries and was treated at several hospitals, including Amrita Hospital in Kochi, where doctors confirmed her brain death on February 13.

With the consent of her parents, the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO) coordinated the donation. Alin’s liver, two kidneys, heart valve and corneas were retrieved and transported under police escort to multiple transplant centres in Thiruvananthapuram. A six-month-old baby received the liver, becoming one of the youngest liver transplant recipients in the state, while her kidneys were allocated to another child. The heart valve and corneas were provided to patients in need of these vital tissues.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George expressed heartfelt gratitude to Alin’s family, acknowledging their extraordinary decision during an unimaginably difficult time. She said their act of generosity would continue Alin’s legacy through the lives she helped save. Authorities described the coordinated effort as a “powerful message of hope amid tragedy.”

The organ transport mission, supported by the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS) and the Home Department, underscored the state’s commitment to efficient and compassionate health-care responses. Residents and health officials alike have hailed the family’s selfless choice as an inspiring example of giving, underlining the profound impact organ donation can have even in the darkest moments.

This remarkable story has resonated widely, reminding the public of the importance and lifesaving potential of organ donation.
