Local business owners in Kochi have submitted a formal petition to the municipal corporation seeking extended operating hours for night markets in the city centre. Traders argue that longer business hours would boost revenue, promote tourism, and revitalize commercial activity in key shopping zones.

Representatives from merchant associations met civic officials this week, highlighting the growing popularity of evening shopping among residents and visitors. They stated that Kochi’s vibrant food stalls, handicraft outlets, and retail shops could significantly benefit if permitted to operate later into the night, especially on weekends and during tourist seasons.

Business owners pointed out that nearby metropolitan cities have successfully implemented regulated night market models, generating employment opportunities and improving the local economy. According to traders, extended hours would also support small-scale vendors and street entrepreneurs who rely heavily on foot traffic after sunset.

However, civic authorities have raised concerns regarding traffic management, public safety, and noise control. Police officials stressed the need for adequate security arrangements, parking facilities, and crowd management plans before granting approval. They also indicated that coordination between multiple departments would be required to ensure smooth implementation.

Residents living near commercial hubs expressed mixed reactions. While some welcomed the proposal as a way to enhance nightlife and urban vibrancy, others voiced concerns about potential disturbances and late-night congestion.

The corporation is reportedly reviewing the proposal and may consider a pilot project in select areas to assess feasibility. Officials have assured stakeholders that any decision will balance economic growth with community welfare and regulatory compliance.

If approved, extended night market hours could mark a significant step in transforming Kochi’s city centre into a more dynamic and tourism-friendly urban space.
