CHENNAI — A **22-year-old man was arrested by Seven Wells police after nearly 485 grams of opium was recovered from his possession during an anti-narcotics crackdown in the city on Thursday, police said.

Acting on a confidential tip-off, officers from the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) intercepted the suspect near a godown on Bashyakaralu Street in the Seven Wells area in north Chennai. When frisked, he was found carrying a paste-like substance later identified as opium, which he allegedly intended to sell.

The accused, identified as P Sachin (22), a resident of MKB Nagar, was immediately taken into custody and a total of 485 g of the contraband was seized. The seized opium has been sent for forensic analysis as part of ongoing investigations. Police also seized his mobile phone and are examining it to trace others connected to the narcotics network.

Officials said the arrest was part of a larger crackdown on drug distribution networks in Chennai, with similar operations leading to other drug busts and arrests across the city in recent days. Authorities are now working to identify additional associates and dismantle any supply chains tied to the seized narcotics.

The case has been registered at the Seven Wells Police Station under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further legal proceedings are underway, news as reported.
