Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has unveiled plans to introduce a comprehensive smart parking management system across 20 key high-traffic areas of the city by the end of 2026, aiming to bring technology-driven order to on-street vehicle parking and reduce congestion.

The initiative comes after the city’s previous parking contract ended in July 2025, leaving gaps in unified management and leading to inconsistent fee collection and chaotic roadside vehicle stopping in commercial zones. The smart parking framework will operate under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, combining private sector efficiency with civic oversight to enhance transparency and effectiveness.

In its initial phase, GCC has identified areas such as Marina Beach, Besant Nagar, Washermenpet, Nungambakkam and Anna Nagar for rollout, where camera-based surveillance, digital and QR code payment options, and real-time monitoring will help automate enforcement and optimise space use. Officials say these smart bays and digital tools will minimise manual intervention and improve compliance, while local stakeholder involvement is seen as critical to success. Some resident groups have called for encroachment removal before the system goes live to ensure smooth implementation.

The project marks a significant effort by the civic body to modernise parking infrastructure and enhance urban mobility in India’s bustling coastal metropolis, news as reported.
