The Kerala High Court has issued an interim stay on the release of The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond — just one day before the film was scheduled to hit theatres on 27 February 2026 — after multiple petitions challenged its certification and raised concerns over its content and potential impact on public order.
The stay order, lasting 15 days, was granted on 26 February 2026, following petitions from individuals claiming that the film’s teaser and promotional material could misrepresent the state of Kerala and disturb communal harmony if released without further review. The High Court also directed authorities to revisit the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) approval, asserting that the board may not have applied its mind adequately in granting certification.
During the proceedings, the court noted that the issues raised — including whether social harmony guidelines were considered during certification — merited closer examination. Legal representatives for the film’s producers argued that the petitions were filed at the “eleventh hour” and challenged the stay. A division bench later heard an appeal against the initial order and reserved its judgment, meaning the stay remains in place while the legal process continues.
Adding to the controversy, there has been confusion over ticket listings on some booking platforms, where shows for the film appeared despite the court’s stay, prompting further legal scrutiny and possible contempt proceedings.
The case highlights ongoing debate on film certification, freedom of expression, and public order in India’s legal system. With the stay in effect and further hearings scheduled in the coming weeks, the eventual fate of The Kerala Story 2’s release remains uncertain as courts weigh creative rights against the potential for social impact.
