CHENNAI, Feb 27, 2026 – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to modernise nine major bus termini across the city, marking a significant push to enhance commuter infrastructure and public transport facilities. The project has been allocated an estimated budget of ₹110 crore and aims to overhaul ageing bus terminals while integrating modern amenities and commercial potential into the city’s transport nodes.
In the first phase, the Corporation has already started upgrades at the Madhavaram and Manali bus termini, focusing on improved passenger facilities, waiting areas, sanitation, and accessibility features. The next phase will extend modernisation to George Town, Kathivakkam, Thoraipakkam, Pallikaranai, Ramapuram, Sriram Nagar, Nanganallur, Adambakkam and Madipakkam termini.
Officials said modernisation will be implemented primarily through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) modes to accelerate execution, ensure better maintenance and mitigate fiscal strain on the civic body. The upgrades are expected to introduce enhanced commuter amenities — such as improved seating, better signage, sanitation facilities, passenger information systems and integrated commercial spaces — to generate revenues and make the termini more user-friendly.
The initiative aligns with broader urban transport improvements being pursued in Chennai, including multi-modal transport hubs and integration with metro and other transit systems, aimed at enhancing overall connectivity and commuter experience. news as reported
