The Kochi Municipal Corporation has launched an investigation into repeated flooding along MG Road following recent heavy rainfall that left several stretches waterlogged and disrupted traffic flow in the heart of the city. The incident, which occurred during peak business hours, caused significant inconvenience to commuters, shop owners, and pedestrians.
Civic officials conducted on-site inspections to assess possible reasons behind the flooding. Preliminary findings suggest that blocked stormwater drains, silt accumulation, and inadequate outflow during high tide conditions may have contributed to the water stagnation. Authorities are also examining whether ongoing construction activities and road resurfacing works affected the natural drainage gradient.
MG Road, being one of Kochi’s busiest commercial corridors, is particularly vulnerable to waterlogging during intense rainfall. Local traders reported that floodwater entered several shops, leading to minor property damage and temporary business disruption. Commuters faced traffic snarls as vehicles moved slowly through water-covered stretches.
Corporation engineers have begun desilting operations and clearing drainage channels to restore normal flow. Officials stated that a detailed technical assessment will be carried out to determine long-term solutions, including possible redesign of stormwater systems and improved coordination with public works departments.
The civic body has assured residents that preventive measures will be strengthened before the next spell of heavy rain. Authorities also urged citizens not to dispose of plastic and solid waste into drains, as clogged outlets significantly worsen flooding situations.
The episode has once again highlighted the need for sustainable urban drainage planning in rapidly growing cities like Kochi, especially in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
