Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for the introduction of artificial snow generation infrastructure in the popular ski resort of Gulmarg, citing increasingly unpredictable weather and warmer winters as threats to the region’s winter sports and tourism industry. Speaking at the inauguration of the 6th Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg, Abdullah said reliance on natural snowfall alone is “no longer viable” as climate variability alters traditional snow patterns, making it difficult to plan events or support tourism reliably.

Abdullah noted that many international winter sporting events now depend on artificial snow to ensure consistent conditions and argued that similar systems are needed in Gulmarg to secure its future as a premier destination for skiing and other snow-based activities. He acknowledged concerns around water and electricity use but said preparing for climate change is essential to prevent skiing from becoming untenable in the region.

The proposal also aims to support local livelihoods dependent on winter tourism, including guides, hoteliers and small businesses. However, it has drawn criticism from opposition parties who say greater focus should be placed on environmental protection and green cover to address climate challenges at their root.
