In a large-scale health initiative in Perumbavoor, authorities and community organisations joined hands to organise a massive medical camp aimed specifically at migrant workers and daily wage earners in the region. The event, held on Saturday, offered a range of free health screenings, consultations, and awareness programmes, drawing hundreds of migrant labourers and their families over the course of the day.
Medical professionals and volunteers provided general health check-ups, including blood pressure, blood sugar, respiratory assessments, and vision tests. Several specialists were also on site to assist with more focused health concerns, giving migrant workers access to services that are often difficult to obtain due to financial or logistical constraints.
In addition to physical screenings, the camp included health education and awareness sessions covering topics such as hygiene practices, nutrition, occupational safety, prevention of common diseases, and mental health support. Outreach workers emphasised the importance of routine health checks and offered guidance on accessing government health schemes and local primary healthcare centres.
Organisers noted that Perumbavoor — with its significant population of migrant workers from various parts of India — faces unique healthcare challenges, including limited access to continuous medical care and preventive services. By bringing specialists and resources directly into the community, the camp helped bridge gaps in healthcare access and fostered trust between migrant communities and health providers.
Local authorities also distributed free medicines, nutritional supplements, and informative pamphlets tailored for workers and their families. Volunteers helped with translation and communication, ensuring that non-Malayalam speakers received clear guidance and understood the services available to them.
Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, with many migrant workers saying they would not have been able to afford or access similar services otherwise. Community leaders hope that this camp will become a recurring programme, with follow-up visits and specialised health drives to support ongoing health needs.
Officials said that data collected during the camp will inform future planning of healthcare outreach in Perumbavoor and neighbouring areas, aiming to strengthen preventive care and ensure underserved populations receive timely medical attention.
