Mexico City – Mexican authorities confirmed on Sunday that Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as ‘El Mencho’, the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed during a military operation aimed at capturing him in Tapalpa, Jalisco state, officials said.
El Mencho, one of the most wanted drug traffickers in Mexico and the United States, was seriously wounded during the clash with Mexican Army special forces. He later died from his injuries while being evacuated by helicopter to a medical facility. The operation also resulted in several other cartel members killed and the seizure of heavy weapons.
The cartel boss’s death triggered widespread violence and unrest across multiple states, including roadblocks, burning vehicles and armed clashes between cartel gunmen and government forces, prompting authorities to advise caution nationwide.
In response to the escalating security situation, the Embassy of India in Mexico issued a safety advisory urging Indian nationals and other foreign residents to “shelter in place” and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in states such as Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacán and Guerrero, where violence and roadblocks have been reported. The embassy also recommended staying indoors, monitoring local media for updates and following instructions from local authorities.
Governments including those of the United States and Canada have issued similar travel warnings, highlighting heightened risks for tourists and residents. Airlines have canceled flights to some destinations amid the unrest, underscoring ongoing security concerns in the aftermath of El Mencho’s killing, news as reported.
