A tense rescue operation unfolded in Kochi after a stray cat was spotted stranded atop a high Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) pillar, drawing concern from commuters and local residents. The animal had reportedly been stuck for several hours on the elevated concrete structure, unable to descend safely.
Alerted by passersby, officials from the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services rushed to the spot along with volunteers from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The rescue team assessed the situation and used specialized equipment, including ladders and safety harnesses, to carefully reach the animal without causing injury.
The operation required careful coordination, as the pillar’s height and proximity to metro tracks posed safety challenges. Fire personnel ensured that metro services were not disrupted while conducting the rescue. After a cautious effort, the cat was safely brought down to the ground amid relief and applause from onlookers.
SPCA members examined the animal on site and confirmed that it was not seriously injured, though visibly frightened. The cat was later taken for further observation and care before being released back into a safe environment.
Officials praised the quick response and teamwork that led to the successful rescue. The incident also sparked conversations about animal safety in busy urban environments and the importance of rapid coordination between civic agencies during such emergencies.
The rescue was widely appreciated on social media, with many commending the humane approach adopted by the authorities in ensuring the stray animal’s safety without causing disruption to public transport services.
