Kerala is set to witness a significant boost in healthcare infrastructure as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan prepares to formally inaugurate the new multi-storey building at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. The expansion represents a major milestone in the state’s efforts to enhance cancer care services and make advanced treatment more accessible to patients across Kerala and neighbouring regions.

The newly constructed 14-storey facility, built at a cost of approximately ₹242 crore, spans around 3.3 lakh square feet and dramatically expands RCC’s capacity to offer comprehensive oncology services. Officials have described the project as a crucial step in addressing longstanding space constraints at the centre, which has long served as a pivotal hub for cancer care in southern India.

Among the state-of-the-art features in the building are advanced radiotherapy machines, nuclear medicine facilities, bone marrow transplant units, operation theatres, and dedicated wards for specialties such as leukaemia treatment, surgery, intensive care, and microbiology. The facility will also include both general and pay wards along with an additional 200 beds to accommodate a greater number of patients without compromising quality or comfort.

In addition, planners have incorporated green building elements such as solar energy utilisation and pollution control systems, reflecting an emphasis on environmental sustainability alongside medical excellence. Two levels of parking have been constructed to support patient families and visitors.

Health authorities note that the enhanced infrastructure will not only improve treatment outcomes but also reduce the pressure on existing facilities that were increasingly burdened by patient volume. The RCC expansion, coupled with other statewide healthcare initiatives, underlines Kerala’s ongoing commitment to strengthening public health systems and delivering high-quality medical care across complex specialties.

The inauguration is expected to draw medical professionals, policymakers, and community leaders, all highlighting the state’s progress in cancer treatment and affirming its position as a centre of medical excellence in the region.
