Kerala man arrested in Coimbatore with synthetic drugs during vehicle check — A 33-year-old man from Malappuram, Kerala was arrested by Coimbatore police on Saturday after a routine vehicle inspection at the Sugunapuram check post led to the recovery of a significant quantity of methamphetamine (a synthetic drug) from his car. The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by Tamil Nadu authorities to crack down on the trafficking and distribution of illegal narcotics in the region.

The incident occurred when a Kuniyamuthur police team along with a special unit stopped a Kerala-registered vehicle for checks. During the search, they found approximately 90 grams of methamphetamine hidden inside the car, a quantity law enforcement officials say suggests an intent not just for personal use but for distribution and sale.

Upon questioning, the suspect admitted to transporting the synthetic drug from Kerala and supplying it to youths in and around Coimbatore city. He revealed that he was selling the narcotic at about ₹3,000 per gram, indicating the operation was potentially lucrative and aimed at an urban customer base.

Following the discovery, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which carries strict penalties for possession and distribution of controlled substances. The contraband was seized along with the vehicle used in its transport, and the accused was produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody pending further legal proceedings.

Authorities say this arrest is part of a broader strategy to tackle the flow of synthetic drugs into urban centres, particularly substances like methamphetamine and MDMA that have seen increased circulation among younger populations. The Coimbatore police have been conducting enhanced vehicle checks and targeted operations in recent months to intercept narcotics trafficking and curb supply chains that bring illegal drugs from outside the state.

Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the case to determine whether the suspect was part of a larger distribution network and to identify any additional associates involved in the supply chain.
