The 2026 Winter Olympics officially began on February 6, 2026, with a grand Opening Ceremony held primarily at San Siro Stadium in Milan—co-hosted in four locations including Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno, and Predazzo as part of a historic multi-site celebration. The theme, “Armonia” (Harmony), was designed to symbolize unity and bring together athletes from across the world in a vibrant cultural showcase.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella formally declared the Games open, celebrating Italian culture with tributes to icons like Puccini, Armani, Dante, da Vinci, and more. Two Olympic cauldrons were lit simultaneously in Milan and Cortina—an Olympic first reflecting the shared host status.

The Parade of Nations featured athletes from more than 90 countries, with Greece leading and Italy closing the procession in the San Siro Stadium. Performances included a dazzling set by global star Mariah Carey, supported by Italian artists such as Andrea Bocelli and Laura Pausini.

However, not all reactions were celebratory. Political tensions surfaced when the crowd reportedly jeered U.S. Vice President JD Vance, reflecting broader global sentiments, and mixed responses greeted other delegations in some venues.

The ceremony’s scale and artistic displays aimed to embody the Olympic spirit of peace, collaboration, and shared human achievement as the 2026 Winter Games officially got underway.
