The Ernakulam locomotive shed will continue its operations, with plans in place for modernisation and upgrades, the Union Railway Minister has confirmed. The clarification comes amid widespread speculation and concern over a possible shutdown of the historic facility, which plays a vital role in railway operations across Kerala.
The Ernakulam loco shed is one of the oldest railway maintenance centres in the region and is responsible for the upkeep of several diesel and electric locomotives. Employees, trade unions, and local residents had earlier raised strong objections following rumours of closure, fearing job losses and disruption to railway services.
Railway officials have now stated that instead of shutting down the shed, efforts will focus on improving its infrastructure and adapting it to new technologies. Proposed upgrades include modern maintenance equipment, safety improvements, and enhanced training facilities for staff.
