External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held a high-level meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, D.C., as part of India’s ongoing diplomatic engagements to deepen strategic and economic ties with the United States. The discussions came on the eve of the Critical Minerals Ministerial, a key multilateral forum hosted by the U.S., where both sides aim to strengthen cooperation on essential supply chains, energy security and shared global interests.

During their bilateral talks, Jaishankar and Rubio “welcomed the recently announced India–U.S. trade deal,” which includes U.S. tariff reductions on Indian exports to approximately 18 percent, marking a significant development in the economic partnership between the two democracies. They also discussed ways to formalize and expand bilateral cooperation on the exploration, mining and processing of critical minerals — materials crucial for technology, clean energy, defence and advanced manufacturing.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing collaboration across multiple areas of mutual interest, including trade, energy, nuclear and defence cooperation, as well as emerging technologies. Jaishankar described the meeting as “wide-ranging,” covering not only bilateral agendas but also regional and global issues. The dialogue underscored the importance of institutional mechanisms and early meetings to drive forward shared priorities.

Rubio emphasised the potential to unlock new economic opportunities by strengthening coordination on critical minerals and highlighted the value of deepening ties between the two nations. As India prepares to participate in further ministerial discussions, this engagement signals a robust effort to elevate strategic cooperation and reinforce a long-term partnership on key geopolitical and economic fronts news as reported.
