The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has confirmed subsidence in one of the piers of the Moothakunnam–Kottappuram bridge on National Highway 66, triggering concern among commuters and local residents. Following the detection, NHAI has ordered detailed inspections by technical experts to assess the extent of the damage and ensure the structural safety of the bridge.

According to NHAI officials, the subsidence was noticed during a routine inspection of the under-construction bridge segment. Preliminary assessments indicate a settlement in one of the piers, prompting immediate precautionary measures. Traffic movement in the affected stretch is being closely monitored, and necessary restrictions may be imposed if advised by engineers.

An NHAI official said that a team of structural engineers and geotechnical experts has been tasked with conducting an in-depth investigation, including soil testing and load analysis. “The safety of commuters is our top priority. Expert agencies have been asked to examine the pier and submit a detailed report at the earliest,” the official stated.

Local residents and regular users of NH 66 have expressed anxiety, as the Moothakunnam–Kottappuram bridge is a crucial link connecting northern and central parts of the district. Any prolonged disruption could significantly impact daily commuters, transport operators, and the local economy.

Meanwhile, district administration officials said they are in constant coordination with NHAI and have sought regular updates on the inspection findings. If required, alternative traffic arrangements will be put in place to avoid inconvenience and ensure public safety.

The Moothakunnam–Kottappuram bridge is part of the NH 66 widening project, a key infrastructure initiative aimed at easing congestion and improving connectivity along the Kerala coast. NHAI officials assured that corrective measures would be undertaken promptly based on expert recommendations and that construction quality standards would be strictly enforced.

Further details are expected once the expert inspection reports are submitted in the coming days.
