In two separate police operations, law enforcement officials arrested an Odisha native in possession of 5 kg of ganja and detained another man with a quantity of MDMA, dealing a blow to illegal drug trafficking in the district.
In the first incident, police intercepted a man from Odisha during a routine vehicle check on the outskirts of the district on Tuesday night. Upon inspection, officers recovered around 5 kg of ganja concealed in a travel bag. The accused was immediately taken into custody, and the contraband was seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Preliminary investigations revealed that the ganja was allegedly being transported for distribution to local networks. Police are probing possible links to interstate drug smuggling operations.
In a separate action carried out earlier the same day, the district police arrested another individual after recovering MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine) from his possession. The arrest was made following a tip-off about suspected drug peddling activities. The accused reportedly intended to sell the synthetic drug to youth in urban areas. The exact quantity of MDMA seized has not been disclosed, and further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain.
Senior police officials stated that both arrests were part of intensified surveillance and anti-narcotics drives being conducted across the district. “We are keeping a close watch on drug trafficking activities and will continue strict enforcement against those involved in the illegal trade of narcotic substances,” a senior officer said.
Both accused have been remanded to judicial custody, and cases have been registered against them under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. Police have urged the public to cooperate by sharing information related to drug trafficking and substance abuse, assuring confidentiality for informants.
