The 38th Kerala Science Congress officially commenced in Kochi on Friday, bringing together researchers, scientists, students and industry experts from across India to discuss innovation, collaboration and scientific advancements. The multi-day event — scheduled from 30 January to 2 February 2026 — is being held at St. Albert’s College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, with a focus on strengthening research links and addressing key scientific challenges.

Inaugural sessions highlighted the importance of shared research infrastructure. Harilal Bhaskar, national coordinator of the Indian Science Technology and Engineering Facility Map (I-STEM) portal, encouraged scientists to use the platform to access specialised equipment and collaborative opportunities, particularly at a time when funding and maintenance challenges affect many research institutions.

Alongside formal sessions, a Kerala Science Expo was launched at the Kalpana Chawla Science Centre, located within St. Albert’s Higher Secondary School. The exhibition brings together over 180 institutions and organisations, showcasing breakthroughs and projects in areas such as space science, ocean science, climate change, biotechnology, sustainable development, agriculture and energy research. The expo is open to the public daily from 9 AM to 7 PM until Monday, and entry is free of charge.

Event organisers said the Congress serves as a vital forum for knowledge exchange, helping participants explore scientific solutions to pressing global and regional challenges. It also fosters engagement between students and experts, encouraging young researchers to contribute fresh ideas.

The broader theme of the Congress — “Ocean Science for Blue Economy and Ecosystem Restoration” — underscores Kerala’s commitment to leveraging its extensive coastline and marine resources sustainably. Scientists, policymakers and industry stakeholders are expected to participate in focused discussions on how scientific innovation can support economic growth while preserving ecological balance.

The Kerala Science Congress, now in its 38th year, remains a cornerstone event for advancing science and technology in the state while inspiring future generations of researchers.
