A special fast-track court in Thiruvananthapuram has sentenced a man to 43 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old minor, marking one of the longest prison terms awarded in such cases in the district. The verdict was delivered after the court found the accused guilty under multiple provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Indian Penal Code.

According to the prosecution, the accused repeatedly subjected the child to sexual abuse over a prolonged period, exploiting trust and familiarity. The victim later disclosed the abuse to family members, following which a formal complaint was lodged and a detailed investigation was carried out by the police. Medical evidence, witness testimonies and the victim’s consistent statements played a crucial role in securing the conviction.

The court imposed separate sentences for different offences, including aggravated sexual assault, criminal intimidation and wrongful confinement. While the sentences will run concurrently, the total imprisonment amounts to 43 years. The accused was also fined, and the court directed that a portion of the fine be paid to the survivor as compensation to support rehabilitation and long-term care.

In its judgment, the court observed that crimes against children have a deep psychological impact and require strict punishment to act as a deterrent. It stressed that leniency in such cases would undermine public confidence in the justice system and fail to protect vulnerable sections of society.

Child rights activists and legal experts have welcomed the verdict, describing it as a strong message against sexual crimes involving minors. They also reiterated the need for faster trials, victim-friendly procedures and better awareness at the community level to encourage early reporting of abuse.

Police officials said the case highlights the importance of vigilance by parents, educators and neighbours, and urged the public to report any suspicion of abuse to authorities without delay.
