The FIS Freestyle World Cup event that was scheduled to take place in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 7–8 March 2026 at the Shymbulak Mountain Resort has been officially cancelled, the International Ski Federation (FIS) confirmed. The decision comes amid organisational challenges that organisers said made it impossible to host this year’s competition as planned.
Almaty has been a regular stop on the FIS Freestyle World Cup circuit since 2019, known for its challenging slopes and vibrant atmosphere, successfully hosting multiple World Cup events and the 2021 FIS Freestyle World Championships. Despite its proven track record, this year’s event will not take place due to logistical and planning issues cited by FIS and local organisers.
In a statement, FIS emphasised that its cooperation with the Kazakhstan Ski Association and local event organisers remains strong, and all parties aim to restore Almaty’s place on the World Cup calendar in upcoming seasons. Athletes and teams who had planned to compete will instead look to other events on the winter circuit as organisers work to address the challenges that led to the cancellation.
The cancellation underscores ongoing difficulties in international sporting event logistics, even at established venues, as federations and hosts strive for smoother future competitions. News as reported.
