A Russian drone attack on a Ukrainian passenger train in the northeastern Kharkiv region has killed at least four to five civilians and injured others, Ukrainian officials said Tuesday, drawing sharp condemnation from Kyiv. The train, carrying more than 200 passengers on a route from Chop to Barvinkove, came under assault from multiple Shahed-type attack drones, authorities reported, forcing the evacuation of all passengers and sparking fires in several carriages.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike as a “direct act of terrorism”, emphasizing there was no military justification for the attack on a civilian service. He said the assault underscored the ongoing threat to non-combatants amid Russia’s broader campaign of strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure.
Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba described the incident as part of a pattern of deliberate attacks on civilian targets, saying rescue teams acted swiftly to extinguish fires and assist the wounded. Emergency responders worked through harsh winter conditions to secure the scene and evacuate survivors to safety.
International reactions were still emerging, but Ukrainian leaders appealed for increased global pressure on Moscow to halt attacks on civilians and uphold international humanitarian law. News as reported
