A five-member gang has been arrested for allegedly abducting and robbing a visitor from Maharashtra in Kochi, following a swift police operation. The incident reportedly occurred when the victim was approached under the pretext of offering assistance, before being taken to a secluded location and robbed of cash and valuables.
Police launched an investigation after the victim filed a complaint, leading to the identification of the suspects through CCTV footage and mobile phone tracking. The accused were apprehended from different parts of the district, and stolen items were recovered during the arrests.
Officials stated that the gang targeted outsiders unfamiliar with the city, exploiting their vulnerability. The case has raised concerns about visitor safety and prompted police to increase patrols in tourist-heavy and transit areas.
Authorities reassured the public that Kochi remains a safe city, emphasizing that such incidents are isolated. Steps are being taken to strengthen night patrols and improve surveillance infrastructure.
The accused have been charged under relevant sections for abduction and robbery and are currently in custody. Police are investigating whether the gang is linked to similar crimes in other districts.
