The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has urged the authorities to urgently relocate 44 families residing in Ambalamugal, citing serious health risks arising from severe industrial pollution in the area. The directive follows complaints from residents who have been raising concerns over deteriorating living conditions and prolonged exposure to hazardous pollutants.
Ambalamugal, an industrial hub near Kochi, is home to several major public sector and private industrial units. Residents have alleged that emissions, effluents, and chemical leaks from nearby factories have contaminated air, water, and soil, leading to frequent health issues such as respiratory ailments, skin diseases, and other chronic conditions. Despite repeated complaints, the affected families claim that effective remedial action has been delayed.
After examining reports and hearing submissions, the Commission observed that the continued habitation of families in the polluted zone posed a clear threat to their right to life and health. The SHRC has directed the district administration and concerned departments to take immediate steps to relocate the affected families to safer areas and ensure access to basic amenities, healthcare, and compensation where applicable.
The Commission also instructed authorities to submit a detailed action-taken report within a stipulated timeframe, outlining relocation measures, rehabilitation plans, and steps to mitigate pollution at the source. It emphasized that long-term solutions, including stricter monitoring of industrial activities and enforcement of environmental regulations, are essential to prevent further human rights violations.
Local residents welcomed the Commission’s intervention, stating that it offered hope after years of living under hazardous conditions. Environmental activists have also called for accountability from industries operating in the region and stressed the need for sustainable industrial practices.
Authorities said they are reviewing the Commission’s directions and will coordinate with relevant agencies to implement the relocation process while addressing environmental concerns in Ambalamugal.
