The Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) meeting has proposed a major development package for Kerala, focusing on strengthening inland waterway infrastructure and promoting water-based tourism across the state. The proposal aims to leverage Kerala’s extensive network of rivers, canals, and backwaters to enhance connectivity, trade, and tourism.
The meeting, attended by senior officials from the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), and state representatives, discussed several projects designed to modernize and expand inland navigation facilities in Kerala. Key proposals include upgrading National Waterway-3, improving navigational safety, and developing modern terminals and jetties at strategic locations.
As part of the package, infrastructure improvements such as dredging, riverbank protection, night navigation facilities, and vessel traffic management systems have been proposed. These measures are expected to support smoother cargo movement and encourage greater use of waterways as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly mode of transport.
Tourism development forms a major component of the proposed package. Plans include the creation of new tourism circuits along backwaters, improved facilities for cruise vessels and houseboats, and the development of waterfront amenities to attract domestic and international tourists. Officials noted that enhanced waterway infrastructure would boost local economies, create employment opportunities, and support sustainable tourism initiatives.
The council also discussed strengthening last-mile connectivity between waterways, road networks, and rail infrastructure to ensure seamless movement of goods and passengers. State officials welcomed the proposals, highlighting Kerala’s potential to emerge as a leading hub for inland water transport and water-based tourism.
The proposed Kerala package will be further evaluated, with detailed project reports to be prepared in consultation with the state government. Once approved, the initiatives are expected to significantly improve inland navigation capacity while reinforcing Kerala’s position as a premier tourism destination.
