Container Road, a crucial industrial corridor in Kochi connecting the port area to major highways, continues to remain poorly lit, causing growing concern among commuters, transport operators, and nearby residents. Despite repeated complaints, large stretches of the road remain in darkness after sunset, increasing the risk of accidents and crime.

The road is heavily used by container trucks, fuel tankers, and private vehicles throughout the day and night. Drivers report that inadequate street lighting makes it difficult to spot pedestrians, cyclists, and broken-down vehicles, especially during rain. Several minor accidents have been reported in recent weeks, many attributed to poor visibility.

Local residents say the situation becomes worse late at night when traffic is sparse and emergency assistance is harder to access. They have also expressed fear over safety, as dark stretches of the road make it vulnerable to theft and antisocial activities. Women commuters, in particular, have raised concerns about traveling through the area after dusk.

Transport unions have urged authorities to treat the issue as urgent, noting that Container Road plays a key role in Kochi’s trade and logistics network. Delays caused by accidents or vehicle breakdowns directly impact supply chains and port operations.

Officials have acknowledged the issue and stated that delays in maintenance and power supply issues contributed to the problem. Plans are reportedly underway to restore and upgrade streetlights, including the installation of energy-efficient LED lamps. However, no clear timeline has been announced, frustrating road users.

Urban planning experts have pointed out that proper lighting is a basic infrastructure requirement and critical for a city that aims to project itself as a major commercial hub. Until permanent solutions are implemented, commuters continue to navigate the dark stretches with caution, hoping that corrective action will be taken before a major accident occurs.
