Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on January 19, 2026 officially inaugurated the first Work-Near-Home (WNH) centre, named ‘Commune’, in Kottarakkara, Kollam district, marking the launch of the state government’s ambitious initiative to connect local talent with quality professional work opportunities closer to home. The facility is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Kerala’s standing as a knowledge economy and remote work hub, while reducing the need for long commutes to urban centres.

The pilot centre has been developed as a plug-and-play workspace equipped with high-speed internet, modern workstations, meeting rooms, air-conditioned cabins and other amenities designed to meet the needs of IT professionals, freelancers, startups, and small groups of technology workers. Capable of accommodating more than 141 professionals, the facility aims to provide a conducive environment that rivals traditional office spaces but within the community itself.

Speaking after the inauguration, the Chief Minister highlighted that the initiative is a significant step toward building Kerala as a thriving skill hub and fostering inclusive growth beyond major cities. He emphasised that creating such local workspaces can help curb migration of skilled youth to other states or countries by offering comparable infrastructure and networking opportunities within their own towns.

The initiative was also praised by state ministers, who noted that ten more WNH centres are planned to be established in smaller towns across Kerala, including locations in Ernakulam, Kozhikode, and Kannur, as part of the project’s pilot phase. Officials say the expanded network could ultimately support thousands of professionals, help retain talent, and generate new job opportunities in regional areas.

Additionally, leaders stress that the programme aligns with Kerala’s vision of reverse migration, where professionals who left the state for employment elsewhere are encouraged to return, leveraging local opportunities and digital infrastructure. The success of the Commune centre in Kollam will be a key indicator for scaling the model statewide.
