Veteran Indian actor Sarada has been honoured with the 2024 JC Daniel Award, the highest recognition bestowed by the Kerala government for lifetime contribution to Malayalam cinema. The announcement was made on January 16, 2026, by the Cultural Affairs Minister, Saji Cherian. At 80 years old, Sarada becomes the 32nd film personality to receive this esteemed accolade, which recognises enduring impact and excellence in the film industry.
The JC Daniel Award carries a cash prize of ₹5 lakh, a statuette, and a citation, and will be formally presented by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at the Kerala State Film Awards ceremony scheduled for January 25, 2026, at the Nishagandhi Auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram.
Sarada’s cinematic journey spans several decades and languages, though she is best known for her seminal contributions to Malayalam cinema since her debut in 1965 with Inapravukal. Over her illustrious career, she has appeared in more than 125 films, bringing emotional depth and nuanced performances to roles that often explored the inner lives and struggles of women. Her powerful portrayals in classics like Murappennu, Iruttinte Athmavu, Elippathayam, and Raappakal remain unforgettable to generations of audiences.
Sarada has been recognised nationally as well, having won three National Film Awards — two for performances in Malayalam cinema (Thulabharam in 1968 and Swayamvaram in 1972) and one for a Telugu film (Nimajjanam in 1977).
The jury that selected Sarada was chaired by veteran filmmaker and previous JC Daniel Award recipient Sreekumaran Thampi, with prominent industry figures such as actor Urvashi and director Balu Kiriyath as members. Their jury highlighted Sarada’s distinctive representation of Malayali women on screen and her enduring influence on the evolution of Malayalam cinema.
As the award ceremony approaches later this month, the film fraternity and audiences alike are celebrating this recognition of one of South Indian cinema’s most respected and cherished artists.
