A devastating accident struck northeastern Thailand on 14 January 2026, when a large construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, killing at least 31 people and injuring dozens more. The crane, part of a high-speed rail construction project, fell onto the Special Express Train No. 21 as it traveled from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani, causing the train to derail and ignite a fire.
