A dense fog and prolonged cold wave continue to grip Delhi-NCR and several northern states, significantly impacting daily life, transportation, and public safety. For the third consecutive day, low visibility conditions were reported across the region, prompting weather advisories and cautionary alerts from meteorological authorities.
Early morning hours saw visibility levels drop sharply in parts of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, leading to delays and cancellations of flights and trains. Road travel was also affected, with commuters urged to drive cautiously as highways and arterial roads remained shrouded in thick fog. Traffic police across major cities issued advisories recommending the use of fog lights and reduced speed to avoid accidents.
The cold wave conditions have intensified in states including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and parts of Bihar, with minimum temperatures dipping several degrees below seasonal averages. Health officials have advised vulnerable groups—particularly the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions—to limit outdoor exposure and take preventive measures against cold-related illnesses.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the persistent fog and cold to prevailing northwesterly winds and high moisture levels in the lower atmosphere. According to forecasts, similar conditions are likely to continue over the next few days, with gradual improvement expected only after a change in wind patterns.
Schools in some districts have adjusted timings, while local administrations have activated night shelters and relief measures for the homeless. As winter peaks, authorities remain on alert to manage disruptions and ensure public safety amid challenging weather conditions. news as reported.
