Kerala has entered an intense phase of political activity as parties prepare for the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, and recent moves by the central leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have drawn particular attention. Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s high-profile visits and public addresses in the state have been widely interpreted as signalling a strengthened campaign effort by the BJP to significantly expand its political footprint in Kerala — a state where it has historically lagged behind the dominant Left Democratic Front (LDF) and United Democratic Front (UDF).

During engagements with workers and newly elected local body representatives, Shah emphasised that the party’s goal extends beyond incremental vote-share gains. He outlined an ambition to lead the state and form a BJP government under its lotus symbol in the upcoming elections, framing recent local wins as stepping stones rather than end goals. He argued that Kerala needs change from the traditional alternation between LDF and UDF rule and portrayed the BJP as an alternative focused on development and security.

Central leadership’s strategy includes highlighting issues such as governance, law and order, and controversial events like the Sabarimala gold heist case, which Shah has urged must be probed impartially — positioning the BJP as a party advocating accountability and justice. These moves are part of a broader effort to capture public attention and galvanise support across diverse communities.

Electoral data and recent local body election trends show that the BJP’s vote share in Kerala has risen steadily over recent years, and the party leadership sees this as evidence of growing momentum. Shah’s repeated confidence in crossing higher vote thresholds reflects a strategic belief that the party can convert this support into broader electoral success.

As campaign activities ramp up with intensified outreach, organisational strengthening, and public messaging from central leaders, Kerala’s political landscape is becoming more competitive and closely watched ahead of the crucial 2026 assembly polls.
