A strongly worded editorial in Deepika, the Kerala Catholic Church–run daily, has sharply criticised Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan over his recent claims about the implementation of the Justice J.B. Koshy Commission report, calling the government’s statements misleading and dismissive of the Christian minority community.
The controversy sparked after the Chief Minister publicly maintained that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had taken “all possible steps” to act on the commission’s recommendations, saying that 17 departments had fully implemented parts of the report and action completed on over 220 recommendations. He also announced a stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for February 6 to discuss remaining concerns.
However, the Deepika editorial accused the government of keeping the Christian minority “in the dark”, pointing out that the full commission report has not been released to the public even more than two and a half years after submission. According to the editorial, this lack of transparency undermines the government’s claims that implementation has taken place, since no ordinary Christian in the state has been able to identify benefits or programmes arising from the recommendations.

The editorial argued that the Chief Minister’s claims appear to be aimed at appeasing Christian voters ahead of upcoming assembly elections, given that the commission was established in late 2020 to examine educational and economic challenges faced by the Christian community and submitted its findings in May 2023.
Church leaders have demanded that the government publish the full report and clarify exactly which measures have been implemented, when, where and how, so that the community can assess the actual impact of the measures. The editorial stressed that without full disclosure, claims of implementation ring hollow and risk eroding trust.
