Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has inaugurated a major breast cancer awareness initiative — the “Mega Pinkathon” campaign — aimed at strengthening early detection, expanding treatment access and promoting women’s health across the state. The event was held at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College auditorium, with health officials and medical professionals in attendance.

The campaign underscores Kerala’s commitment to fighting cancer by bringing screening services closer to communities. Free breast cancer screenings are being offered at primary health centres statewide, particularly targeting women aged 30 and above and those with a family history of cancer. As part of ongoing efforts under the state’s broader cancer control strategy, approximately 2.1 million people have already been screened in the past year.

To further enhance early diagnosis and treatment, the state has upgraded cancer care infrastructure at regional facilities, including the Regional Cancer Centre, Malabar Cancer Centre, and the Cochin Cancer Research Centre. Chemotherapy services have also been expanded to taluk hospitals, making lifesaving care more accessible in rural and semi-urban areas.

Under the Karunya Health Security Scheme, patients can access free cancer treatment, while essential medicines are made available at affordable rates through the Karunya Sparsham initiative. Health Minister Veena George highlighted the state’s vision to transform Kerala into a leading cancer treatment hub by decentralizing care and strengthening networks across all 14 districts.

The campaign also includes public awareness programmes, community outreach and partnerships with local health workers to reduce stigma around cancer and encourage early health-seeking behaviour. Special women’s clinics and community health networks have been mobilized to ensure sustained engagement and follow-up care.

This renewed focus on breast cancer control comes amidst rising cancer incidence in the state and reflects Kerala’s broader strategy of proactive screening, enhanced treatment services, and preventive healthcare education for its population.
