The Ludhiana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded the imposition of President’s Rule in Punjab, citing a sharp rise in violent crime and what it describes as a complete breakdown of law and order in the state. Party leaders allege that incidents such as shootings, extortion threats, gang-related violence, and targeted killings have increased in recent months, creating an atmosphere of fear among citizens and business communities.
Addressing the media, BJP representatives claimed that the state government has failed to effectively control criminal networks and protect public safety. They argued that police morale is low and administrative coordination weak, resulting in delayed investigations and inadequate preventive action. According to the Ludhiana BJP unit, the deteriorating security situation is not limited to urban areas but is also spreading to semi-urban and rural regions.
The party has urged the Governor to submit a report to the Centre highlighting the gravity of the situation and recommending central intervention under Article 356 of the Constitution. BJP leaders said President’s Rule is necessary to restore order, ensure impartial governance, and rebuild public confidence in the administration.
The state government, however, has rejected the allegations, maintaining that law enforcement agencies are actively tackling crime and that opposition parties are politicizing isolated incidents. Officials have pointed to recent arrests and crackdowns as evidence of firm action against criminal elements.
The demand has intensified political tensions in Punjab, with civil society groups and legal experts closely watching developments. The issue has once again brought the debate on federal intervention, public safety, and constitutional provisions into sharp focus news as reported.
