waste management

Kerala’s local bodies are stepping up waste management and sanitation efforts across the state as part of continued efforts to maintain cleanliness and protect public health. Under the Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam (Garbage‑Free New Kerala) campaign, municipal corporations and district panchayats have intensified operations to manage solid waste, enforce rules, and engage communities in cleanliness drives.

Following widespread concerns over waste dumping and pollution, local governments are actively implementing strategies to address these challenges. In Kollam, mobile septage treatment units are being introduced by the district panchayat to safely collect and treat septage waste from homes and establishments, converting solid waste into manure and purifying water before release, helping safeguard local water bodies and the environment.

Municipalities like Kalamassery have conducted large‑scale cleaning drives on key roads and land parcels, seizing vehicles illegally dumping waste and imposing fines on violators. Officials also issued notices to individuals whose waste items were traced back to them, showing a stronger enforcement approach by local bodies.

To encourage public participation, the state government has increased incentives for reporting illegal waste dumping by offering a share of the fines imposed on offenders.

These strengthened measures reflect Kerala’s ongoing commitment to cleaner towns and villages through improved waste management practices, stricter enforcement, and community engagement.
