The head of Britain’s MI6 intelligence agency has publicly accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of intentionally prolonging peace negotiations over the war in Ukraine to secure a strategic advantage rather than genuinely pursue an end to the conflict. In her first major speech since taking over the agency, Blaise Metreweli said Moscow is “dragging out negotiations” while deploying hybrid tactics that keep pressure on Ukraine and Western allies. She described the current environment as a “space between peace and war,” where Russia’s actions—including alleged cyberattacks, disinformation and other covert threats—are aimed at testing Western resolve and undermining NATO unity.
Metreweli’s comments come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Ukraine, the United States, and European leaders to craft a peace framework. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also emphasized that any lasting agreement would require robust security guarantees backed by NATO allies, highlighting Western concerns about Moscow’s intentions.
Meanwhile, European leaders have pushed for enhanced security guarantees for Ukraine, including multinational forces to support stability if talks succeed. Separately, Britain’s military chief urged the UK to increase preparedness against Russian aggression, reinforcing fears that diplomatic delays could serve Moscow’s longer-term goals.
