The Central Government has announced an ambitious plan to accelerate the nationwide adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) through a new subsidised rollout programme aimed at reducing urban air pollution and lowering the country’s dependence on fossil fuels. The initiative includes financial incentives for buyers, tax rebates, and special subsidies for manufacturers to scale up domestic EV production. The programme also prioritises the deployment of affordable electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, which form a major share of India’s urban transport system.
As part of the plan, the government will expand the charging infrastructure across major cities, national highways, and tier-2 urban centres. Partnerships with private companies are being encouraged to establish fast-charging stations at petrol pumps, parking lots, metro stations, and commercial hubs. Officials believe that a stronger and more accessible charging network will remove one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: range anxiety.
In addition to environmental benefits, the EV rollout is expected to create new jobs in battery manufacturing, electronics, and vehicle servicing sectors. The government is also promoting local production of lithium-ion batteries to reduce import dependency and lower vehicle costs over time.
Experts note that the subsidised EV policy could significantly improve air quality in densely populated cities, where transport emissions are a leading cause of pollution-related health problems. The rollout will be implemented in phases, with the first phase targeting metropolitan areas with high pollution levels. The Centre has urged state governments to support the initiative through complementary policies and awareness campaigns to encourage widespread public participation
