Meta has announced that it has struck several commercial AI-data licensing agreements with a broad group of prominent news publishers — including CNN, Fox News, USA TODAY, Le Monde, and media groups under People Inc., among others — to feed “real-time” news content into its AI chatbot, Meta AI.
According to Meta, this move is intended to enable Meta AI to deliver up-to-date global news, entertainment, and lifestyle content whenever users ask news-related questions. Replies from the chatbot will now include direct links to publisher articles, allowing users to read full reports and enabling media partners to reach new audiences.
The initiative marks a strategic shift for Meta — which had previously scaled back its news distribution efforts, including shutting down its “News” tab and pausing many news-publisher deals. By re-entering the news content space through licensed AI integrations, Meta aims to enhance the reliability, timeliness, and diversity of information available through its AI services.
This development is also seen as part of a broader industry trend: as generative-AI competition heats up, tech firms increasingly rely on formal content licensing agreements with publishers to balance content supply, legal compliance, and user demand for timely news.
