A powerful winter storm sweeping across northern Europe has caused widespread chaos, knocking out power and grounding flights across multiple countries. The storm, which struck from late Friday through the weekend, brought destructive winds and heavy rain, leading to extensive travel and infrastructure disruption.
In the Netherlands, dozens of flights were cancelled at Schiphol Airport as strong winds made take-offs and landings unsafe. Across the UK and Scandinavia, gusts exceeding 100 mph downed trees and power lines. In Scotland alone, tens of thousands of homes lost electricity, and major parks — including those in London — were closed for safety.
The storm’s human cost was also felt: authorities reported fatalities in both Ireland and France, where people died in weather-related incidents, including falling debris and strong coastal conditions. By Sunday, emergency crews across Europe were still working to restore power and clear road, rail, and ferry routes as travel remained severely disrupted.
