The Tamil Nadu government has approached the Central government seeking approval for three new extensions to the Chennai Metro Rail network, aiming to strengthen public transportation and improve connectivity across the city’s expanding suburbs. The proposal was announced as part of the State Budget for 2026–27.
The proposed extensions include the Airport–Kilambakkam, Koyambedu–Pattabiram via Avadi, and Poonamallee–Sunguvarchatram via Sriperumbudur corridors. These routes are expected to connect key residential areas, industrial zones, and major transport hubs, making daily travel faster and more convenient for commuters.
The state government said the proposed corridors will complement the ongoing Chennai Metro Phase II project and help reduce road congestion by encouraging greater use of public transport. Officials believe the expansion will also support the city’s long-term urban development and improve access to emerging growth corridors.
The proposal is currently awaiting approval from the Central government. Once cleared, detailed project reports, funding arrangements, and construction work are expected to begin, marking another significant step in Chennai’s metro expansion.
