The Tamil Nadu government has announced a major boost to Chennai’s public transport system by approving the induction of 1,000 new air-conditioned electric buses for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC). The initiative was unveiled as part of the 2026–27 State Budget, which allocates ₹13,561 crore to the transport sector.
The new buses will be introduced under a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, where private operators will supply and maintain the buses while MTC oversees operations. The project aims to modernize Chennai’s bus fleet, improve passenger comfort, and encourage the use of environmentally friendly public transportation.
The electric buses are expected to offer air-conditioned, low-floor, and accessible travel, making daily commuting more convenient for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and regular passengers. The initiative is also expected to reduce carbon emissions and support Tamil Nadu’s transition toward sustainable urban mobility.
Officials said the expansion of the electric bus fleet will strengthen Chennai’s public transport network, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and provide cleaner, quieter, and more efficient transportation for millions of commuters across the city.
