Hyderabad, August 5: Intermittent monsoon showers continued to disrupt normal life across Hyderabad on Tuesday, with waterlogging, traffic congestion, and slow-moving vehicles reported from several major roads and junctions. Commuters experienced long delays during peak hours as persistent rainfall reduced road visibility and caused flooding in low-lying areas of the city.
Among the worst-affected locations were Begumpet, Punjagutta, Kukatpally, Hitech City, Madhapur, Mehdipatnam, Secunderabad, and Banjara Hills, where rainwater accumulated on roads, resulting in lengthy traffic snarls. Several underpasses witnessed temporary waterlogging, prompting traffic police to divert vehicles and advise motorists to use alternative routes.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police issued advisories through social media and traffic monitoring systems, urging commuters to avoid waterlogged stretches, maintain safe driving speeds, and refrain from attempting to cross flooded underpasses. Officials also requested office-goers to plan their travel in advance and allow extra time for commuting due to slower traffic movement.
Teams from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) were deployed across the city to clear blocked stormwater drains, remove fallen tree branches, and pump out stagnant water from major roads and intersections. Emergency maintenance crews worked continuously to restore normal traffic flow and minimise inconvenience to the public.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast further moderate to heavy rainfall over Hyderabad and surrounding districts during the next 24 to 48 hours as active monsoon conditions persist over Telangana. Weather officials warned that isolated areas could experience intense spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Public transport services, including city buses, also experienced delays due to congested roads, while commuters using two-wheelers were advised to exercise extra caution because of slippery road conditions. Authorities appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and to stay updated through official weather bulletins and traffic advisories.
Meanwhile, civic authorities have intensified monitoring of flood-prone locations and instructed disaster response teams to remain on standby in case of emergency situations. Officials stated that stormwater drainage systems are being continuously inspected to prevent flooding in vulnerable neighbourhoods.
Despite the disruptions, emergency services remained fully operational, with the Traffic Police, GHMC, Fire Services, and disaster management teams coordinating closely to manage the situation. Authorities expressed confidence that ongoing drainage improvement works and rapid-response measures would help reduce the impact of heavy rainfall as Hyderabad continues to experience active monsoon weather.
