Thiruvananthapuram, July 27: The Kerala government has officially launched ‘Digital Square’, a flagship initiative aimed at strengthening technology-enabled learning in primary schools across the state. Introduced by Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) under the General Education Department, the programme forms part of the state’s 100-day Education Action Plan and seeks to equip young learners with essential digital skills from an early stage.
The initiative was inaugurated by General Education Minister N. Samsudheen during a statewide orientation workshop held in Malappuram. More than 4,000 headmasters and headmistresses from schools across all 14 districts participated in the event through an interactive video conference, marking the beginning of the statewide rollout.
Digital Square has been designed to integrate technology into classroom teaching using Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)-based educational tools. The platform includes applications for language learning, music, painting, animation, coding, creativity, and interactive classroom activities. It also incorporates accessibility features to support students with disabilities, helping create a more inclusive learning environment.
According to KITE officials, the programme aims to bridge the digital divide by making modern learning tools available in government schools while promoting self-learning, creativity, digital literacy, and problem-solving skills among students. The initiative builds on Kerala’s long-standing efforts to modernise school education through technology and digital infrastructure.
As part of the broader education reform agenda, the government is also preparing to introduce ARISE (AI & Robotics Initiatives for School Education) in high schools, enabling students to gain hands-on experience in artificial intelligence, robotics, drone technology, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Together, the two programmes are expected to prepare students for emerging technologies and future careers in a rapidly evolving digital economy.
Education experts have welcomed the launch of Digital Square, describing it as another significant milestone in Kerala’s digital education journey. By combining innovative teaching methods with technology-driven learning, the initiative is expected to improve classroom engagement, enhance digital competencies, and prepare students with the skills required for the future while ensuring equitable access to quality education across the state.
