The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed three major qualification tests for the Gaganyaan mission, marking another significant milestone in India’s first human spaceflight programme. The latest tests focused on critical crew module systems designed to ensure astronaut safety during re-entry, splashdown, and recovery, bringing the mission one step closer to launch.

The first qualification test validated the Crew Module Uprighting System (CMUS), an essential safety mechanism that ensures the crew capsule automatically returns to an upright position after splashdown in the sea. The system uses stored cold-gas technology to inflate flotation devices, allowing astronauts to remain in a safe orientation until recovery teams arrive. This capability is considered vital in rough sea conditions.

The second test successfully qualified the Crew Module–Service Module Connect and Disconnect System (CS-CDS). This mechanism enables the clean separation of the service module—which provides propulsion and power—from the crew module before atmospheric re-entry. Engineers confirmed that the separation occurred smoothly and that the crew module’s structural integrity remained intact throughout the process.

The third qualification test assessed the crew module’s ability to withstand apex cover separation loads. The apex cover protects the parachute compartment during launch and is jettisoned before parachute deployment. The successful test verified that the crew module structure can safely tolerate the forces generated during the separation sequence, ensuring reliable deployment of the parachute recovery system.

These achievements follow ISRO’s recent successful Integrated Main Parachute Air Drop Test (IMAT-05), which qualified the main parachute system under maximum expected load conditions for the first uncrewed Gaganyaan G1 mission. Together, these tests demonstrate the reliability of the spacecraft’s recovery systems and reinforce ISRO’s emphasis on astronaut safety before embarking on India’s first crewed mission.

Gaganyaan aims to place a crew of Indian astronauts into low-Earth orbit for a multi-day mission before safely returning them to Earth. ISRO officials said the successful completion of these qualification trials significantly advances mission readiness and reflects the agency’s rigorous testing programme, which continues to strengthen India’s capabilities in human spaceflight.
