The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has warned that temporary power restrictions may be required after 7:00 p.m. on Monday if it is unable to procure sufficient electricity through the national power exchange. The advisory comes as the state experiences a sharp increase in electricity consumption and reduced availability of power from external sources.
According to KSEB, electricity demand has risen significantly compared to previous years due to below-normal rainfall linked to El Niño conditions and persistently high atmospheric temperatures. Although the southwest monsoon is underway, rainfall has not been sufficient to bring down temperatures or reduce electricity consumption across the state.
The Board estimates that Kerala’s power demand on Monday could increase by 300–400 megawatts compared with recent days. At the same time, electricity available through the power exchange has declined because several states across the country are experiencing high demand, making it more difficult and expensive to procure additional power during peak hours.
KSEB clarified that restrictions would be imposed only if the required quantity of electricity cannot be purchased from the power exchange. If implemented, the measures are expected to affect the evening peak-demand period after 7 p.m., when household and commercial electricity usage is at its highest. The Board emphasized that the restrictions are intended to maintain grid stability and prevent widespread disruptions.
The utility has appealed to consumers to use electricity responsibly, particularly during evening hours. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary use of high-power appliances such as air conditioners, water heaters, electric cooking devices, and EV chargers during peak demand periods. Conserving electricity, officials said, will help reduce pressure on the grid and may lessen the need for power restrictions.
KSEB added that it is continuing efforts to maximize electricity procurement and monitor the situation closely. Consumers will be informed promptly if any temporary restrictions become necessary, while the Board works to ensure reliable power supply across Kerala despite the challenging demand conditions.
